(CNSNews.com) – The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee's health care legislation will give the Health and Human Services secretary the authority to develop "standards of measuring gender" -- as opposed to using the traditional "male" and "female" categories -- in a database of all who apply or participate in government-run or government-supported health care plans.

"Gender identity" is routinely used by homosexual groups to define differences in sexual orientation, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and, in some cases, "questioning."

What does gender identity have to do with sexual orientation? Transgender isn't an "orientation".

The replies to this article such as, "APA is admitting that there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that a person may be born with male plumbing and be genetically female - or vice versa.", have to be damaging.

While I like the idea of getting away from male and female, I don't like the idea of being in some special database or a normal one with an asterisk next to my name. Kind of reminds of the Jews wearing a Star Of David in WWII. I'm in enough of gov. databases as it is and the government has a history of losing data. They almost lost my info once already and my brothers school district shipped his info to Nigeria. Just what I want is some religious group getting that list.

Besides that, what purpose will this serve anyhow?
"These people need more care... " In other words, the first to be cut when the budget becomes tight.

Database are for the collection of information.  They use can be for great good, such as the development of very adequate health care including SRS.  Or they can be used for great evil, such as the Holocaust.

We are all in a database that is under government control, of one form or another.  Census, Departments of Motor Vehicles, IRS, Voter Registration, Social Security.  And they are all interconnected somewhere.  The only way to avoid them is to go completely off the grid.  No phone, no electricity or gas, no car, no bicycle ( registration of serial number to protect from theft ), no job ( without being paid under the table ).

If you don't want to be in another database, give up everything and go live in a tent in the deep woods.  One can not escape them.

Or use them to get better benefits for the future.

I'm all for using them for good, however too often they are used for bad, or allowed to fall into inappropriate hands. I work in I.T., I get reports all the time about them falling into the wrong hands or lost, or sold off.

The issue though, is what this will be used for. The purpose just seems innocuous at best.

If this were a registry for African Americans, or Gay/Lesbians people would be up in arms, but because it is gender, no one will raise a fuss since so many feel they conform to one or the other.
