College Risk Assessment?

Ryan

WTF!
I started college yesterday as Ryan. The tutors were great about it and tried really hard with names (they knew me before). The guy from support and the new tutor had a "talk" with me about my situation and brought up potential problems. Obviously things I'm aware of, but I don't see any problems with my situation at college.

But I just got a call today saying that I couldn't go in until Thursday because they've got to do a risk assessment on me.

I don't really see anything different about me and any other student, so why do they need to do this?
The only real problems that came up were about me using a non legal name, but as long as it wasn't on legal forms, it was fine.
The other problem was toilets, but again, I'm fine using male and they're go to tell the security staff just as a pre-emptive strike to any potential issues. The support guy suggested I use female toilets, but then all my classmates are gonna be like "Why's Ryan using the girls toilets!?". Not gonna happen.

To be honest, I think it's all BS. Why can't I just get on with it like everyone else?

Well, why can't you?  You're asking for special privileges.

Risk Assessment? You can't spell assessment without asses ;).

Honestly, I never would have forseen that. I really would have thought they'd have protocols in place already for dealing with differently gendered students.

But hey - the staff are being respectful. That's a good thing. I know you were worried they'd think you were a crazy pervert or something.

If you're curious about the risk assessment you could always ask them - they'd probably be ok with explaining what it is and why they need to do it if you ask them diplomatically enough.

A few days in the scheme of the whole course is nothing major. You've done the nerve wracking bit, now there's just a little paperwork to deal with, and you can go about things as normal (well, hopefully).

They are just trying, as all such organizations tend to do, cover their butt and make sure everything is by the book.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
