Epilation

OMG I bought an epilator .. a good one by Braun.. wanted one of the best ...so excited to use and ouch.. ouch.
I used on one area until the hair was pretty much gone..just a small area.. I really did not think it would hurt so much but dang.. it tough.
Anyway, do you get used to it.. or just bear it in small areas and move on.. I was thinking it would work faster but takes a bit to clear an area.
Also, after doing it have a red area which I assume is natural after pulling all the hair out.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Epilator can cause scars and ingrown hairs. About 10 years ago, I once used it, but just stopped it after seeing sever scars caused by ingrowth in my legs.

I use self-hypnosis pain control when I epilate.

Here are a couple:

Imagine a dial in your head, that allows you to control the level of pain you feel. Imagine that if you turn the dial up, you feel more pain. If you turn the dial down, you feel less pain. As you epilate, imagine the dial being being turned down and feel your pain lessen.

It also helps me to tell myself that I will experience the hair being pulled out as a loving caress. This works surprisingly well.

Or I can tell myself that whatever I think I feel in that area is in reality something I'm imagining.

There are a few others I could suggest, but these are the ones that work best for me.

It does get easier once you've done it a couple of times. Make sure to exfoliate every time you wash and moisturise daily (I use baby oil but then I've dry skin, I think if you skin is naturally oily baby oil might not be a good idea) to avoid any ingrown hairs. You shouldn't get any scaring unless you use it on loose or wrinkled skin with out pulling taught or on already damaged/cut/scared skin. It's recommend you brush and clean the elipation head/tweezers before each use in case it pinches skin to reduce the chances of infection. I would say it's a lot safer then waxing and can be done properly on your own.

For me the hardest thing I found with it when first using was the worry that it was pinching skin, but once used on a cleared area became obvious it wasn't. It not likely to pinch anywhere other then places with very loose skin (i.e. the scrotum) it's recommended you pull skin taught anyway but especially so in those sorts of areas.

You might try being waxed and then epilating when the hairs grow back finer should be less painful, also if your epilator allows to do it in the bath in hot water. Also you and use attachments that make it narrower which are recommended for sensitive areas but that'll mean it'll take longer. I quickly rubbed across lots of times, only removing a few hairs at a time when I did my genitals, when the area has less hairs then you can try normally and it shouldn't be as painful.

Kind of like doing your eyebrows except instead of soaking a face towel in hot water and then putting it on your brows to open up the follicles, sit in a tub of hot water for a while and then try. I tried waxing once and had a problem with ingrown hairs so ripping them out isn't a good experience with me. And yes I exfoliate religiously everyday so that wasn't it.

If you do get ingrown hairs I'd avoid using tweezers, instead use a needle (sterilized with a flame).

I have a drink or two whenever I dare to epilate. It's not a fun process but gives good satisfaction when finished.

I couldn't do it. Im  such a wiimp. It hurt so bad I think I put myself into shock.  LOL. I went with DIY laser (I have dark hair), Silkin sensEpil.

I use an epi and yes, it does hurt for awhile.  After a short while it seems that my skin gets desensitized to the pain and I'm able to continue without as much discomfort.  The skin does get a bit red in places, but it clears up. It works best on short hair, so if you normally shave let your hair grow out to around 1/8th inch or so and then use the epi.  Long hair is more painful.  Also, going slow seems to provide the best results.

I have a love hate relationship with my epilator. I love it that the cis-women in the apartment are genuinely envious of my legs... but I hate the inevitable complaints from the other girls when they hear "the wood-chipper".

At this point the complaints are more annoying than the pain.

One of my biggest annoyances  is my facial hair..not too bad when I've just shaved in the morning ..but progressivly worse through the day..
I thought how can I get rid of this..
Electrolosis .. too expensive and too long ..
Laser .. also too expensive and I have grey hair anyway,so that's out..
Epilator .. not reccomended for the face .. but I thought what's the worst that can happen?
so I got an epilator ..
Once I started I was surprised at how much dead skin around my mouth region .. perhaps these were the ingrowing hairs that I'd heard about .. that I'd released .. I forgot to mention I was using tea tree oil after I epilated.. I also exfoliated aggressivly (with a nail brush) and was happy to see results .. but realised this was not going to be done in a couple of weeks.. It seemed the more I pulled out the more they regrew .. something to do with growth cycles they grow at different rates .. It certainly takes dedication .. I liken it to pulling a wire brush across my face ..
Well after 3 weeks and epilating my face almost every day.. I think enough ..
I've admitted I'm not going to win this one ..a lot of pain and you think you've made some progress.. then next day they're all back again .. I had to give it a try, but reading on the web some people have done it for months .. without any real progress, even years..
So it's back to shaving every day again ..
One good thing is the extra exfoliating I've been doing to the mouth region every day .. has made a difference to how it looks and feels.. much smoother and clearer looking ..I'll definetly be keeping that up .. 50 years of running a razor over my face.. it's got some work to do ..

The thing about scaring is alarming. If a pinchy type epilator causes scaring from in grown hairs, I would think waxing would have the same problem.

I tried my pinchy type epilator on my face only once, it broke my skin and I was very careful.

I start at the edge of where there is hair and gradually move in with the flat part, if yours has a flat part, pressed against the skin, so it is a wider area that is tweezing. It is similar to what dentists do recently, they cause sensation around where the needle is going to pierce, so it disguises the pain.

Waxing the face with hard wax, supposedly works for men with tough beards. I imagine you would go a little bit at a time and be sure to pull skin taut.

But, I am planning electrolysis and using a home laser thingy, so I have wax and pinchy epilator thing for no use right now.

Great choice! Braun is also my favorite epilator. Now I am going to tell you that the pain is bearable and you could also use a numbing cream or some packs of ice to rub the area, where you want to epilate. A hot or warm shower or bath before the epilating process will also ease the pain, because the heat will loose the pores and the hair's root will be released faster.

I used cream first so there wasn't a lot of hair when I did epilation. I didn't think it hurt that bad. The worst part was the private area, which wasn't much of a surprise. Its also definitely less painful after multiple uses. Yes I have in-grown hairs, but less than the cream, and the cream had less than shaving. My only complaint is that the 45 minute battery isn't long enough. I think I need to order a second one to eliminate this issue.

Oh by the way for some reason I seem to be enjoying it a little more than I should. I think I might be addicted to epilation.
