This year the Southern Comfort Conference will celebrate the heroes of the transgender movement while helping people of today.

Southern Comfort, set for Sept. 21-26, is one of the largest transgender conferences in the country and draws people from across the world. It is a week where established transgender individuals come together with those are questioning, in transition, or allies to exchange knowledge, talk about their own experiences and raise a glass or two in solidarity.

The theme of the 2009 conference is playfully reflected in the "Heroes Among Us" dinner on Saturday — where convention goers are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite hero, whether that be a superhero, historical character or a personal inspiration — and more seriously in events and discussions throughout the conference.
