Renee Baker, a corporate diversity trainer from Dallas, urged employers to be overt about equality discussions.

"If a company doesn't openly embrace diversity, then a company doesn't embrace diversity," she said.

Baker herself had gender reassignment surgery two years ago, when she was a married male engineer in the defense industry.

"I began taking hormone treatments and transitioned in the workplace. I went from having a flattop and moustache to this," she said, flipping her long hair. "You can't sneak that in."
