There's a sex scandal rocking Italian politics - and it has nothing to do with the skirt-chasing Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

A high-profile governor stepped down on Saturday, days after four policemen were arrested for trying to blackmail him with a video purportedly showing him with a transsexual in a Rome apartment.

Piero Marrazzo had previously called the video a "fake" and declared himself the victim of a smear campaign - but struck a different tone in a statement yesterday.

Italy's main opposition party was in turmoil yesterday as its supporters voted in a primary to select a new leader after one of its high profile politicians was forced to step down because of a video apparently showing him with a transsexual prostitute.

Piero Marrazzo, who was once tipped as a future leader, announced just hours before the polls were due to open that he would resign as governor of Lazio.

ROME — A prominent opposition politician embroiled in a scandal over his alleged encounter with a transsexual prostitute has resigned his high-profile job as head of the region that includes Rome.

The office for Piero Marrazzo said Tuesday that he had resigned as governor of the Lazio region.

After the story broke out late last week, Marrazzo handed over office responsibilities to his deputy over the weekend.
