Has this ever happened to you? You buy a bottle of good(normaly) wine & open it up, pour, & get that first whiff of that mildewy "corked" smell? It really makes me mad cuz it's not a $40 bottle that you can take back, exchange, & probably get a $10 off coupon. Now I'm stuck with this filthly bottle where it's pour out or plug your nose & swallow hard.

This has happen to me a couple of times. Nothing worse than sitting down to relax and have a good glass of wine then you open it and wow ! what a turn off!
sometime it the way the store stored the wine other times it just a bad cork, That's why many wineries are switching to screw tops.

If its a wine I recently purchased I take it back inexpensive or otherwise, and I've alway gotten another bottle, or my money back. One time it with a good bottle of Pinot Noir from Oregon (MY favorite) that I ordered on line, called them the next day and they sent me a new bottle for free.

The thing is I know the store(Trader Joe's; the most awesome store on Earth!) would take it back no problem, but they are just so costumer friendly that I'd rather take it in the purse than return it. But I can't afford to pour it out. Am I a crybaby or what?! Yesterday(actually a few days ago) I was double checking the details of checking out, found some new hope & now just want to make light of things.

Luna!

If it's undrinkable, then obviously drinking it is not really an option. I can kind of understand the "sorry to inconvenience you" mentality (I have trouble with this too), but it is their job, and from what you said they probably won't mind.

"costumer friendly"
Ordinarily I don't point this kind of thing out, but the image this inspired was just too amusing.
My mental image of the store immediately changed to one full of women in maid outfits and schoolgirl uniforms... ^_^ Cosplay convention at Trader Joe's, yay!

I don't care for "Trader Joe's", a little uppity for my tastes.  But isn't that the reason for letting it breath?  I am a beer girl, myself.

I can't speak for the chain, but the people at my TJ's are just beyond awesome. I mean just truely go out their way cool. I'll plug & swallow tonight, if nothing else I'm truely grateful to have something so trivial to piss & moan about.

Definitely do not shop at T's nearly as much as I used to it is very convenient, right next to my gym and my sons Taekwondo, but just too expensive. I do still buy wine and a few other things there (believe it or not there are a few tings they have cheaper). Thier wine is much less expensive than most places. I would take it back. I can't stand corked wine. Once it happened at a wine bar so they immediately replaced it other than that a few cheap bottles from T.J's I let sit too long. Definitely not drinkable. Don't feel bad about taking it back if needed I am sure they would be fine with it.
Cheers, (or not with bad wine)

I usually buy my wine in a box and it's always been fine.
Don't look at me like that, lol, it's good!

If you get the box variety it's great for cooking and the occasional nip. I have to admit the occasional glass of lambrusco while out is nice...but it's so rare in this house I'd have a hard time finishing a bottle anytime soon and the box keeps it fresh.

GACK!!! Captain, she cannot take anymore! I broke, 1/2 of that horrid filth down the right pipe that rest down to hell. I have enough pills to kill 20 oxen if I just wanted to get high. No more, never again, I will not drink a corked bottle of wine, EVER! GACK!

no matter what store I get my wine at and what their customer service is like, I would Never stand for being sold corked wine and Not going back to get a replacement bottle!
Never!

Here's the most pathetic part, the bus ride to return the wine costs more than the wine itself. Now I really need a glass...

That means that either your public transit is rubbish, or that you've probably bought a wine that's so poor quality that it's "supposed" to taste like rubbish... :P

Ouch! Reds are fussier, they taste like vinigear if they are the cheapest stuff you can find. I actually thought I hated acidity, but no just vinigear. I drink good ol' $2 Shaw in Suavgion Blanc & like it. I can't deal with bottom of the barrel reds, even though I prefere reds in general especially from Chile(prices are going to go up on these fast when the economy rebounds).

Lol.  Kelly's and Great White.  The two best wines in the whole wide world.  :eusa_sick:

Cheap and nasty wine is, well, cheap and nasty.

Cheap and palatable is possible but you really need to know what to buy and where from.  Getting one of them in high street chain stores is nigh on impossible, although I grant that my "cheap and nasty" calibration may be a little higher than most :)

As for corked - ugh, that's awful.  Despite the cheap image of screw caps (and resultant snobbery against them), they really are the best and most cost-effective seal on a bottle.  Fortunately none of my premium bottles has corked so far but I too dread the musty smell like a wet swimming costume or towel that was left in a carrier bag for too long.

Thumbs up to screw tops! I think boxes(ducks for cover) are even better since there's never air inside them, but the damn things are too heavy for me to carry on the bus.

Screw top are good, however I still prefer cook, There's just something about un-screwing a nice bottle of wine, It just ruins the ambiance ! many wineries have also changed to artificial cooks which work well.
As far as boxed wine I use them when were having a party, some good wines are now available, and they last for a long time !
