KALAMAZOO -- Kalamazoo voters approved an expanded anti-discrimination ordinance Tuesday, but the process for filing a complaint alleging discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity is still a work in progress.

Unlike most discrimination actions, which are handled by state and federal agencies, Kalamazoo's gay-rights protections must be enforced locally.

That's because Kalamazoo's provisions outlawing discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals in housing, employment and access to public accommodations are not found in Michigan statutes or federal law.
