TLDEF Files Employment Discrimination Complaint with Florida Commission on Human Relations Against McDonald's for Refusing to Hire Transgender Woman

December 7, 2009 - TLDEF today filed a Complaint with the Florida Commission on Human Relations against an Orlando McDonald's restaurant for refusing to hire 17-year-old Zikerria Bellamy because she is transgender.

On July 10, 2009, Zikerria applied online for a position as a Shift Manager or Crew Leader at McDonald's.  On July 28, after managers at McDonald's learned that Zikerria is transgender, she received the following voicemail message from one of the managers:

While it does not surprise me that she was not hired, I wonder if her lawyers are looking into defamation for calling her the "F" word.  And what does that have to do with the price of tea in China.

I'm always a little amazed by blatant discrimination against anyone, especially if it's easily documented. The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF) is filing a complaint (lawsuit) today (December 7th, 2009) with the Florida Commission on Human Relations. It's because an Orlando McDonald's restaurant for refusing to hire 17-year-old Zikerria Bellamy because she is transgender. And, in the process of discriminating against her, she received a voicemail message from one of the McDonald's managers:

I wouldn't want him homeless and broke.  But maybe unemployed and not able to find work as a manager.  Hummmmmmmmmmm ..... on the front line of, say, Burger King.   Or as a waiter at Denny's.
