South Africa: Countdown to Same-Sex Marriages Test

ONLY a month remains for Parliament to resolve the deep divisions over same-sex marriages before the Marriages Act automatically changes as a result of the Constitutional Court ruling granting same-sex unions the same rights as traditional marriages.

Religious and gay and lesbian support organisations recently battled it out during public hearings by the home affairs committee. One side argued that the Civil Unions Bill takes away the sanctity of marriage and the other said the equal but separate doctrine adopted by the bill still does not go far enough and will not pass muster with the court ruling.
