I recently was told that there are organizations in California that will actually help pay for your surgery. The source of this information is rather...questionable. Have any of you ever heard of this?

If there were organization that could help with surgery, I would be on the phone and writing e-mails to be on any list.

It is better than looking at the butcher knife and a bottle of Jack Daniels.  :D

1. I've never heard any such thing.

2. Even if there were, why would they do that for someone who didn't even live in California?

According to a reliabale source, it is possible to have Medi-Cal pay for it.  You have to pay up front and they will pay for it with prior approvol.

If you're employed by the City of San Francisco or Universiy of California you also qualify.

I've heard of a few start-up ideas in regards to such things.  Heard of lottery-style financial support, fund-raisers, "grant" style, etc.

Don't have hard info or links though.

When I was briefly in California I did find it relatively easy to find a clinic with a trans-dedicated organizer who could answer questions.

I also have heard the in S.F. at least, if you are a government employee they'll cover Vaginoplasty.

I was going to say this but wasn't sure.  Definitely worth looking into!  ;)

Actually, I contacted Dr. Reed in Miami, Florida before when I was still deciding on a surgeon, and on his Yahoo group he posts opportunities for financial help with SRS. I was interested, so I sent him an email asking for more information. He told me to send him some more information to see if I was a good candidate and he'll see if he could help. I ended up not going through with it since he required genital electrolysis to be complete before the surgery, and I haven't even started on it yet (I don't need it now since Brassard doesn't require it).

I would join the Yahoo group Dr. Reed manages and email him asking if there's still financial assistance available. It's not a loan either, you don't have to pay it back, but it won't pay for everything. He told me it's for those who have some of the money but can't get it all, so I took that as meaning that it might be 2-3K or something. Who knows, but it's worth a shot.

I hadn't heard anything either, and you know what they say about things sounding to good...

I was looking to move to California after getting my Nursing degree (whenever that happens), but considering the state just asked the government for a bailout it would take some hard convincing to get me to. This might qualify as that something.

So you pay up front and then Medi-cal reimburses you?

If Medi-Cal has any money left to pay anyone.  Which gets more problematic by the day here.
