Kidman takes on risky role to 'challenge myself'

As Nicole Kidman lounges in a fancy suite at a mid-Manhattan hotel, she's asked why she decided to play the world's first post-op transsexual in an upcoming movie.

Called The Danish Girl, the film is in the development phase, but the Australian actress confirms she's agreed to do play the controversial role of Einar Wegener.

Scrunching up her face a little, Kidman seems positively puzzled by the implication that the picture's inappropriate for her.

"I don't know why people are finding that so odd," she says. "I am an actress, and I do like to challenge myself."

Wow, that ought to guarantee that this movie will have the record breaking box office that Australia had, or the remake of Bewitched, or the awesome success of the Golden Compass.

nice to see that theres a really mainstream film being made about a trans person, just wish there were more about FTMs people seem to ignore the fact that we exist and concentrate on MTFs, who of course have a strong cause and their story should be told, but to only have 2 FTM films that are popular (boys dont cry and Mulan) is shocking compared to 'To Wong Fu', 'Kinkyboots', 'TransAmerica', 'Some Like It Hot', 'Mrs Doubtfire', most of the 'Carry On' films, and you get the picture, but still, mainstream transmovie is always good when well portrayed

Yeah, I'm not thrilled with that choice either, it's not like its going to get more than five people out to see the movie if recent box office is any clue.

I'm looking forward to seeing this... I read the book about a year ago and loved it.. Einar in the book is so introverted and stark that it will be really interesting to see her on screen. I think Nicole will do a splendid job of it and don't understand the fuss
The picture on the cover of the book looks a bit like Nicole so maybe that had something to do with their choice.

Danish Girl was a good book, however I wish they'd publish Lili's actual writings, I'd really like to read them!
