I'm sure some people are going to come down on me for this, but I have a hard time with "Canada's Sexiest Man" if, when I look at him, I see a sort of dykey girl instead of a man. And when he opens his mouth, he just reinforces that response.
I know there are different ways to be a man. I'm not dissing his gender identity or his trans-ness. I don't even care if he's legally male. But if the physical cues aren't there, then I won't read him as male. I'll respect his gender ID big time, but I only accept him as a man because he tells me he's a man. Otherwise, I wouldn't have a clue.
I think my sexual orientation might be a problem here. If I were pan or omni or bi, maybe it wouldn't be a problem; maybe Lucas' extreme androgyny wouldn't affect me this way. But I'm sexually attracted to men only. People I read as men even when they don't tell me they are men.
I used to think Bowie was hot in his genderbending heyday, but he came across to me as an androgynous man, not an androgynous woman.
Who got to vote, anyway? Wasn't it just a readers' poll in some magazine?
