Colorado voters passed a ban on gay marriage and rejected spousal benefits for same-sex couples, dealing a setback to the gay-rights movement.

Voters approved Amendment 43, a citizens initiative that defines marriage as between one man and one woman in the state constitution, virtually eliminating the chance for gay marriage.

And voters opposed Referendum I, which would have granted gay and lesbian couples many of the legal rights and responsibilities of married couples, such as the ability to make funeral arrangements for a partner and to inherit a partner's property.

Sadly, 7 of 8 states with gay marriage bans on the agenda passed the ban.  Only Arizona shot it down.

What I am wondering is why the vote wasn't to pass gay marriage rather than to ban it.  It's pretty obvious that wording it as a ban casts negative light on the subject.  Who decided this should be a vote to ban rather than to pass?

Somebody who didn't want the law to pass.

I hope all the states vote on this.  Once we get it behind us, the conservatives won't be able to use it to get out the right wing vote.  Then they'll not be able to use it to convince people to vote for them.

The conservative platform has always been against abortion. Well, they held all branches of the government and didn't do anything on abortion.  I hope that their supporters remember how much their representatives used them and their prejudices to get them out to vote but did nothing for the issue.
