Boy, reading that article, bells are ringing again!

"I'm nervous about talking about this; you know, grandma is out there, and she reads. But I think it's important to let people see that transgender people are not Jerry Springer freaks. We don't come to this overnight. When there is such a social punishment attached to being transgender, believe me, nobody is going to fake this. Usually people have ruled out every other option by the time they get to this place. I've had clients who don't admit to being transgender until they're 80; they wait for everybody close to them to die."
