I figured this has been asked before but I searched and didn't find it so I'll ask.

I've never been to a therapist, not for any reason. So what kinds of questions do they ask? How much do they need to know? What should I look out for?

the red flag is any therapist explicitly telling you "do this" as they are suppose to guide clients towards resolution of issues. they can recommend other services, but it is up to you to take up the offer.

the questions start with personal history, what your family and growing up was like, and to figure out what issues other then the obvious as part of current mental state. (gender incongruence) this will take a session or two at most.

after that the clinician will attempt to establish an image of the clients gender identity, and if there are comorbid conditions precluding medical treatment. during that time the loved/hated soc really kicks in as the clinician does the gatekeeper to try to make sure the client is aware of the medical consequences and is making an attempt to socially integrate into gender.

hope that helps
(ps: make sure they have a masters or better degree, for top surgery and starting T, it doesn't matter what creed the therapist has, but for bottom surgery it makes or breaks letters)

Thanks, that's actually really helpful. Now, to find a therapist my insurance covers!

If by any chance you're reading this and know the answer, how long does it generally take for them to refer people for HRT?

Depends on the therapist mostly, the current trend (in cities) is enough sessions (3?) to make sure you aren't loony toons then say "enjoy hormones".

The worst that can happen is 3-4 months of sessions before the hand-off to medical treatment. (this assumes the prescribing practitioner demands a letter vs informed consent)

That's not too bad, I thought it would take a year or so.

Can't wait now. Many thanks for the answers.
