Prodigal Sons opens
Being trans was the least of filmmaker Kimberly Reed's doc dramas.

Even if Prodigal Sons, the new autobiographical film by Kimberly Reed, had gone the predictable route, it would have succeeded in being a seductively dramatic documentary: In it, we follow Reed—formerly Paul McKerrow, a teenage football quarterback and overachiever—as she journeys with her lesbian lover from NYC to rural Montana for her 20th high-school reunion.

But the standard (oh, the irony!) ->-bleeped-<--goes-home tale quickly takes a backseat to a bevy of fascinating plot twists—a mentally disturbed adopted brother named Marc and his unearthed relationship to Orson Welles chief among them—as Reed deftly leads viewers into an even more complex miasma of sibling rivalry and family resentments.
