Just got excited and bough my first epilator... since I expected it to be painful bough one that was supposed to be "gentle" by using wet/foam mode ... spent about  US$116 (IN Rs. 5200) any case ... realized I was way too hairy ... (Indians are among the hairiest people on Earth .... so I blame my genes...  :P) after a several hours trimming since day before ... (yesterday was out with a friend the entire day) still no where near done...  so I went ahead and started on the places I finished trimming and joy of joys I realized that despite falling from a ladder, get hit by cricket bat in the head when I was 8 and various other injuries I realized I could not handle the damn (pardon my language) pain... ???  :-\ :( :(

so to get used it I now have to go back and start with waxing and the best part my parents are coming back tomorrow morning... so its going back in the box for now.... till who knows when...  :eusa_wall: :eusa_wall: :eusa_wall:

Sorry about the rant, but does anyone know of any faster way of trimming ... and as for waxing I was suggested nylon strips to help remove the wax/hair... anything that could also be used?

The pain does get less as time goes on.
I started with an electric hair clipper to cut them to about 1-2 mmm, otherwise it clogs the epilator, and hurts more.
Mine is a Braun and has two rows of small rollers in front of  and behind the tweezer head. They vibrate and numb the skin a little bit , but not a lot.
The hair will grow back at different rates so there will be a lot less after the first few times. I am hoping that HRT will reduce the need to epilate and shave a lot.

I really hope so.. after spending all that much money .. went back and got a US$1 (INR Rs 35 so less than $1) box of cold wax which has been more effective and after an hour and half of trying to wax my left leg... just have 2 patches of hairless skin to show for it ... the joys of being hairy...  :-\

Looked for a Braun... but all they had available was the basic one ... which would have been even more painful...

Maybe my technique is wrong... sure feel like an idiot for spending that much... could have got a cool new Android phone for about US$40 more...

luckily parents are coming today but tomorrow ...

I go to a day spa and get waxed every 6 weeks. Takes less than 20 min and is moderately painful - but very tolerable.

From a formerly very hairy person ...

Laser is probably the best and most effective technique to deal with it.

I used epilators for a few years on my legs. Each time was quite painful. All it got me were pain during epilation, ingrown hair a week or two later, and itchyness for weeks thereafter. I listened to people who said that it would get better, but it did not. I was a very healthy high-testosterone male. Obviously my body hair were very thick and stong. The Braun, Philips, etc epilators were all the same for me - ineffective beyond a week.

I see that you are on HRT. The reduction in testosterone should take care of some of the hair.

For the rest, laser is probably your best choice. It takes time, but it is less painful and more effectively for the long term. It took me about 5-7 laser sessions per area of my body. Yes, this is an expensive proposition, but like you I too have had the great fortune of having been extremely hairy on the body (with hair loss on the head).

You must note if men in your ethnicity are hairy, the women are hairy too. So you do not need to be absolutely hairless. You merely need to reduce the darkness or prominence of the hair to the level at which the women of you ethnicity appear to be. I am not there yet, but I hope to be in couple more sessions. However, the amount of reduction in my body hair has been considerable since I started getting laser done.
