This is one of those Humongously Over-Simplifying Answers, but power and ego have got to have a lot to do with it. Of course, those are elements in activism and other "outsider" political activity as well - and indeed, in any position that involves having influence and being well-known - but being a career politician would seem to be one of the most direct routes to power out there.

Hi PI,
I suppose this is where I am coming from. Power to what? What is the kick? OK I can understand the corrution bit, yea I can get my kicks with any chick'guy I want, kill people, take drugs etc etc. But what do people like Obama's (your Pres?) get out of it. OK the top person gets money, power and stuff - but what is the thrill? Sorry it is just so removed from my mind set that I cannot understand it.

I think I can see the appeal of being the most powerful person on the planet - the power over other people is simply addicting - and in Obama's case, I think he actually wants positive change, although he doesn't seem to be managing to effect especially much of it. He's way too inclined towards bargaining and compromise - it was very refreshing during the campaign, but tear-inducingly frustrating when he started doing it with health reform. He's simply been giving the Republicans too much power all these months.
