Slattery became Candy Darling, one of the Warhol Factory's ''superstars'' hymned in Lou Reed's song Walk on the Wild Side.
''Candy came from out on the island/ In the back room, she was everybody's darling,'' rumbled Reed, himself one of Andy Warhol's proteges. The ''back room'' was the private bar at Max's nightclub. Everyone there was famous, if only within the 20-odd blocks of New York's down-at-heel bohemia.
