What to Expect With Spiro?

I had my first appointment with my doctor for HRT this week. I wanted to start with a physical to check on my basic health and risks before I went into the big changes. It turned out I chose the right doctor for this approach, as her philosophy is very much a "safety first, go slow" thing.

Anyway, due to her cautious approach she wants to start me on Spironolactone first. Wait a few weeks. Run some tests. Raise the level of Spiro. Wait a few weeks. Run some tests. And only then start on any Estrogen. I'm fine with this approach, and appreciate the caution as messing with my body's endocrine balance has never had much of a "Wheee!" factor for me. It's means to an end, otherwise I'd never do it.

However, as my other MTF friends locally have either not started HRT, or went to a different doctor who started them on Spiro and Estrogen together right away, I don't have a lot of information about what effects to expect from Spiro ALONE before any of the rest is introduced.

Are there any people out there currently taking Spiro without Estrogen? And if so, what kind of effects have you noticed?

I took Spiro and Fincar for just under a year before starting Estrogen. My mood mellowed out alot - like there were a lot less ... passions, for lack of a better word, colouring my reasoning. Also, I had some breast growth, and my libido went way down. My face also softened a bit and my skin smoothed out slightly.

Keep in mind though, all this happened very gradually - physical changes I only really noticed after comparing photos, and I only really realised how much my mood had been altered after I started estrogen and had hormones influencing my mind again.

Interestingly, hair patterns didn't change.

Hope that helps.

I took spiro for four months before going on estro because of the expense of getting to and paying for the endo, + I did it for the sake of my family (I was going nuts and needed to feel like I was on SOMETHING, but I knew they were still having lots of trouble). As it was, it was still too much for them, my wife and I never slept in the same bedroom again since a few days after I started, and I moved out three months later. Sigh. (But I digress!)

Within a month of starting spiro (standard dose size), I was able to note the basic major changes, including skin softening and sensitivity. Also felt temperature a lot more easily, I am sure I was colder than before. I found myself sometimes startled to tears unexpected; it was easily for emotions to make me physically cry. I think I noticed some lessening of body and urine odor as well. Maybe some thinning of body hair diameter (so the hairs were not as thick),  but that took more time -- by the time I was really sure, I had been on estro a month or two.

And yes, I had some minor breast development, to the point where I felt uncomfortable wearing white t-shirts if they weren't extremely baggy. My butt also gained fat on the back and underhang, although my hips did not really grow at all.

When I went on estro, things really kicked in, though; I thought my skin had been sensitive and soft before? Well, WOW (!).

Yes, I advise taking photos every so often. It's interesting to chart the progress, many of the visual changes are slow ones but they do accumulate. You basically will first find yourself wondering, "Huh, am I REALLY seeing something here?" and then a few weeks or month later, you'll know for sure.

Oh yeah! I tend to forget about the cold being in South Africa now. I was in London at the time though, and while I was freezing my butt off, everybody else was running around in a T-shirt. Especially those Scots, I swear they have ice running in their veins! :P

Also expect very happy erection free days, they only now come for me in my dreams.

The low blood pressure can be a problem though, your prone to getting light headed at times when over exerting or getting up fast.

I take it you have been warned about potassium build-ups?

The delay between spiro and estrogen is pretty normal. Docs tend to do that simply to get baseline effects of the various drugs so if there are reactions it's much easier to tell which meds they are coming from.

The light-headedness at first and the potassium-conservation are things to watch for, drink plenty of liquids & you should be fine. You will prolly also notice that your rate of urination will increase with the spiro as its a diuretic.

Your breasts will usually develop some on the spiro alone as well, as I recall.

It all sounds about right to me.

Congratulations, Dana.

Thanks all! This info has been both helpful and a little jazzing for me. I didn't realize Spiro alone had such a dramatic effect. I had heard about the lower libido, and in some cases halting male pattern baldness (which thankfully I'm not afflicted with anyway), but the stuff about some breast development was unexpected.

And yes, my doctor has warned me of the things to watch out for on Spiro. It's one of the reasons she starts with Spiro alone - to make sure all those little warning signs are under control before proceeding.

Hi Dana,

I have been on only spiro for almost two years now, and I am only 20 now so I may have been more sensitive to change, but here's what I experienced so far...

Body/pubic hair lightening a bit in color,

hard to get an erection/masturbate/ejaculate,

very slight breast development and pain/tenderness in the chest area,

thats about it so far...hope it helps!

Your doctor is taking the right approach.  One must remember that none of these medications where designed for male consumption so testing as you go is very prudent.

The general effects of spiro affect everyone in a similar manner it's just the degree of the effect that are different with each patient.  So where one person may experience noticeable softening of the skin, another may experience a lightening and softening of body hair etc.

There is a pretty good article in our Wiki that provides a good amount of information.  You may want to look at these:

I've been on Spiro only for about 4 months now.

It feels great! I'm no longer driven by sexual needs all the time. My body hair seems to be slowing down and if I'm not being too wishful in my thinking I seem to have a bit more tissue in my breast area.

My experience:
My acne cleared up.
That was all. None of the other things described in this thread; no breast growth, no discernible change in body hair, no sexual dysfunction, no light-headedness, no temperature sensitivity.
I had a couple of headaches in the first week, but I severely doubt that was due to the pills - more likely sinus issues.

IMO, people tend to over dramatise the effects of being on T-blockers.

It really is the key to let the E do it's work. I got most of the typical effects including some hair regrowth on my head (some MPB) and can't wait for more (only at 5 months now) and skin is clearer for sure but it could be better, my skin always needed help. I like the taste, minty fresh lol. I would really look out for/stay away from salt substitutes and if potassium ever does get high follow a lower potassium diet. I think a combo of age and genetics are a huge factor in your personal results.

when I was changing brand estradiol since one brand was very difficult to find in my country, so the doctor said to give alternative brand, in that case I had asked to my doctor how about without using estradiol but still using spiro?
Do you know what my doctor said?
No, you must keep using estrogen otherwise you will get many problems on your body.
I asked him again, what's the problem?
the first, your skin will dry, and will going to earlier older, like as menopouse for women.
the second, your bond could not accept the calcium as well
the third, your emotion will increase, hard to sleep at the night, sometimes your body will sweat when sleep at night.
the fourth, your body will easy to weary
the fifth, .....bla...bla....bla

So many horible things would be happen to our body.

Wow, this thread is a blast from the past. I've been on Spiro plus Estradiol combined now for about 8 months. I was on Spiro alone for the 8 months previous.

Smith, I am happy to report that I didn't experience a single one of those nasty effects your doctor was so concerned about. The main negative effect on me was a nagging concern that my doctor was holding back the good stuff far too long. ;)

Do these symptons continue as long as spiro is used?  Or do the symptoms go away after awhile?
