André Bruce Ward, the nationally recognized costume designer at Theatre Memphis, has made clothes over the years for almost every big musical imaginable, sometimes two or three times over.

But he truly wished he could retire without ever having to make the nearly 100 costumes for the musical "La Cage aux Folles."

"I thought it would be a pain," he said, sitting behind an antique Singer sewing machine, adding intricate details to one last dress. "I only really started to take it seriously when the guys came in and they were very serious about it. They wanted to do it right."
