When Alex Durig talks about his old band the Endtables, the long-since defunct Louisville group that just reissued its scant catalog with a self-titled retrospective on Drag City, he's essentially defining the punk-rock credo.

"It's more like a garage band than any kind of professional band, but it's got some sincerity to it," the guitarist tells Spinner. "We obviously weren't in it for the money. We weren't trying to imitate anybody else."

They wouldn't have had time. The Endtables, fronted by transgendered singer Steve Rigot and featuring Durig's little brother, Albert, on bass and Steven Jan Humphrey on drums, lasted just two years, 1978-80. It was enough time to record six songs and play some shows.
