In my short period of time in detention last week (26-hours) awaiting a hearing for our  White House Six's Don't Ask, Don't Tell action, I saw some of what happens to trans people in jail environments. However, I did not experience everything trans people experience in detention -- by a long shot. I was prepared to experience worse, and fortunately I didn't have to.

The DC Trans Coalition  has a whole section on Jails. Here are some of the things that routinely happen to trans people in jail environments, as listed on the DC Trans Coalition's website:

I have done hard time in prison, not a jail but a real Oz type of penetentary. People died from shanking and fights were comon. Gun towers over the yards....ect.
In the pen I knew 3 transwomen who lived in the general population and one intersexed dude.
All of them survived the place via prostitution. Not a choice, they had too just so they could survive. It
It is inceredibly inhumane to house women with men in prison even if those women are trans. I dont care what she did or what her crotch looks like no female should be in a male prison.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.
