OLA'S JOURNEY TO BECOME AHMED

A GAZA TEEN TELLS HIS STORY OF TRANSFORMATION AND ACCEPTANCE

By Omar Graieb in Gaza - Special to Palestine Note

Ola spent her life wishing to become someone else, wishing to live life that doesn't require her to be trapped in her all-girls' school uniform. It was only when she turned fifteen that she became comfortable in her own skin. That was when she became "Ahmed."

Ola came from Abed Rabbo Estate, an area that has suffered a great deal due to the Israeli occupation and last year's offensive in Gaza. Even amid the blockade, the story of Ola, now known as Ahmed Fayez, has become the talk of the town.

Palestine Note asked Ola, now Ahmed, to describe what it is like to be in his situation while living in a place like Gaza.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
