Whether it's cross-dressing, drag, or transgender characters, the New York stage has welcomed all kinds of gender ambiguity. Of course the theater has blurred lines between the sexes even before Shakespeare cast men as his female leads.

This spring several shows have opened exploring the topic.

Here are our Top 5 characters that embrace in drag:

1. Albin in La Cage aux Folles. When a musical takes place in a ->-bleeped-<- club, there are sure to be men wearing high heels. Douglas Hodge wears them gracefully in this musical comedy that takes an albeit sugarcoated slap at conservative definitions of family.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
