Cape May, NJ senior and aspiring fashion designer Derrek Lutz wanted to wear a dress to prom to express his inner self.  He told the local CBS affiliate:

    Yea, I'm a cross dresser.

and describes himself on his MySpace page as

a drag princess who loves loves makeup and music.

But his school's principal said no to the dress on Thursday, with the prom scheduled for tonight, May 1. Derrek decided he and his female date would still go to the prom and have a good time, no matter what, not to protest but because it's well, prom. Derrek explained:
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde

Trans people may not be protected from discrimination under many state laws but I'm sure that outright gender discrimination is illegal everywhere. I'm surprised that more trans people whether a kid in a school or an adult at the workplace don't contest these situations. In other words, if women can wear pants, men can wear dresses. If a woman can go without makeup and pretty nails, then men can wear makeup and nail polish. If a woman can have her hair cut short then men can have long hair. Often it is a double standard in our society where women can literally wear men's clothes but a man can't dare wear anything feminine. That's gender discrimination plain and simple. Hope the kid had a good time at prom.

I fought this battle with employers. Some I lost and some I won. Most places can't discriminate based on sex which is where the clothes thing came from for me. There was no way I was ever going to wear a dress for a uniform if the guys didn't have to wear one.
