i purchased a medium tri top 983 white binder. My bra size would be either a 44AA or a 44A (which I think is huge they stick out like almost 2 inches). So would a medium be to big or to small considering that just pure ribcage is 40inch, to bind effectively.

Hmz, based on the UW sizechart (M 34-36) I think it's going to wind up being too small. Will it bind? Most definitely if you manage to get it on (from what I've read that's not exactly the simplest task with the tritop), but based on the sizes I think you'll experience some severe cutting in beneath the armpits as well. Technically, an L size would probably be the better option if you don't mind some discomfort since that size is already below your actual size.

Measure yourself properly by the guidelines that Underworks give.

"1. How to measure:  First take a snug measurement under the bust line with a tape measure.  Next take another measurement over
the fullest part of your chest.  Again not too tight but not too loose. Take the average of theses two measurements and apply the result to the scale provided below. Each item has a different scale based on the elasticity of the fabric used and the cut of the garment, so please pay attention to the sizing scale for each style."

You probably won't be able to get it on, I'm afraid.  :-\  You could try it with a rash guard underneath, but I think you will find it very uncomfortable.  There's really no need to asphyxiate yourself. In fact, having a binder that is too small can sometimes result in odd, unnatural bumps showing up, that would be concealed under a slightly larger binder.

I was a 40 E and I wore a medium.. it was tight, and took me 17 minutes to get on, the first time (LOL), but, it bound great!
That was the 997 though.. not the tri top..

Something important to remember about underworks binders is if you get one that may seem too small at first when you try to get it on, it will probably actually fit.. it just requires a bit of wriggling around and struggling the first couple times.. lol.. but you WILL get into it.
