I go tighter on the hip, and looser on the legs. Too short makes it worse, I like the ends to sit on the backs of my shoes a little.
Boot cut?
Well, what I like about (slim) boot cut, strangely enough, is that it's designed to be a slightly feminizing cut on cis guys - it's designed to create the illusion of a little curve in the butt area. So there's a bit of extra room there, and having a slight curve doesn't look out of place or feminine. And they're supposed to sit on a guy's hips rather than his waist, so the butt/crotch/knee all land in the right place when you wear them belted on your hips. In general, they just work with the FTM body rather than against it (and God knows we work against it quite enough in the top half).
I don't like carpenter, cargo, or other very baggy syles because they just make me look bottom-heavy. Also, men's boot cut is reasonably common on gay men (about even with skinny jeans) and basically never seen on lesbians, while carpenter/cargo/baggy are essentially unheard-of on gay men but quite common on lesbians.
And just because I'm a little bit on the chubby side in the hips, I don't like anything that's tight at the hips/waist because it creates bulges above and below the waist. (Another advantage of the jeans I linked: the rise is low enough that it's virtually impossible to get that belly fat bulge below the belt.) If my pants fit correctly at the hip, I can actually tuck certain shirts in and look good.
I agree about liking them a bit longer though.
