When Karen Bassett played Beauty's sister in Beauty and the Beast, she looked longingly at the male actors sword fighting on the Neptune stage.

"I loved it. I watched these fights every night; it was the best part of the show. I knew I would like to do it. At that time I thought, 'Yeah, but there's no plays with women fighting.' "

So she wrote one.

This week Bassett and Francine Deschepper are fighting on stage in Heroine, Bassett's historical drama about two real-life figures, 18th century pirates Ann Bonny and Mary Read, imprisoned together in 1722 in a Jamaican jail.
