Yes. It is a recurring issue. I use men's at workplace as all know who I am, and women's when I go out. But this simple rule does not work very well in some cases.

I attended an international conference held in a hotel here for 2 days. There are my colleagues and other people who know me very well. And participants from other countries also get familiar to me as we introduce each other.

And, I entered the men's after checking there are few people near the restroom. One of my male colleagues entered following me. We chatted each other, and a stranger came in. He was wide eyed, looking at me.

Of course, I try not to use a urinal, but when I am going out, somebody comes in, looking perplexed.

I do not want to surprise them. And it is a little bit stressful that strangers study me again and again in the restroom.

I am thinking using women's in the next time. But I am a little bit aftraid that I may face my female colleagues or some college students who know me. Of course, my female friends just accept my sharing the restroom with them.
They just joke about it later. But, young female students may react differently...

A kind of trifle dilemma, and any solution will be welcomed, although it would very difficult.

It is a headache isn't it?

I try to have a "bathroom buddy" to go in with.  In the majority of cases it is my wife and she sort of acts as an escort.  She is happy to do this and when we have gotten looks, she says something like "Don't worry, she's with me."  And the amazing thing is, that sort of defuses the situation.  The women just go about their business as if having an escort makes it suddenly okay.

Not sure why it works, but it seems to have done so at least twice for us.  :)

Wondering if one of your female colleagues would we willing to be your bathroom buddy for events like that and sort of run interference for you if anyone clocks you?

Meh, ran into this tonight at the local live-action game - I usually go into the bathroom of whichever gender I am portraying at the time.  Well, tonight that was the ladies restroom as I was switching from  blouse/jacket to a t-shirt (way too hot in that building).  My wife told me on the way home that the coordinator over the event wanted her to ask me not to use the women's restroom in the future since HE wasn't sure how HE would handle it if people saw me there.

Kinda falls on me to be the one to handle it in my logic, but it happens.

My solution - that is a large building on a college campus that we use for the game and only the closest bathrooms are usually used by our group.  So I will either use the close men's room or a ladies' room on another floor or sufficiently far from the main area :)

Other than that, great night - the T-shirt kinda threw people off.  Got it at Spencers cheap - "Screw being a princess when I grow up, I want to be a vampire!"  Perfectly appropriate for a vampire themed live-action roleplaying game.

Laters :)
