The drag-queen express, Philippine style

No, it's not Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, although the Philippine movie The Thank You Girls has often been compared to it. Indeed, the shot of a flamboyant entertainer riding on top of the bus -- in this case a brightly painted jeepney -- holding a colourful banner in the wind is a signature shot of both films. But The Thank You Girls is more raw, almost documentary in its style, and if the hopes and aspirations are not exactly spiritual ("The title is within my reach. They'll worship my booty"), there are real fears that are easy to see under the expansive behaviour.
