Last week was the first time i opened my lips.  It is very pink and at the very top below the hood i saw some crust.  I got scared but I thought maybe that was my clit. This is the first time I had seen right beneath the hood.  I assumed the clit was right under the hood.  Also that is where my discharge comes from that area there.  I noticed for the first time last weds an odor that I assume is a feminie odor starting to occur.  Apparetnly it is because it turned me completely off.   hahahah.  The first day it was strong and i could smell it in the car but the next day it has subsided and i have to stick the pad up to my nose to smell it.  Is that a normal smell?  Now it isnt coming from my vagina because not one time has the dilator smelled at all.  It is coming from the clit area.

Also, what in the heck is that little crusty area right under the hood?

i researched the word and this is what i came up with but is that the clit that is under it you think?

Smegma, a transliteration of the Greek word σμήγμα for sebum, is a combination of exfoliated (shed) epithelial cells, transudated skin oils, and moisture, and can accumulate under the foreskin of males and within the vulva of females. It has a characteristic strong odor. Smegma is common to all mammals, male and female. Mycobacterium smegmatis is the characteristic bacterium involved in smegma production, and is generally thought to form smegma from epidermal secretions.

In healthy animals, smegma helps clean and lubricate the genitals. In veterinary medicine, analysis of this smegma is sometimes used for detection of urinary infections, such as trichomoniasis. Some have recommended periodic cleaning of male genitals to improve the health of the animal

Both males and females produce smegma. In males smegma is produced and accumulates under the foreskin of uncircumcised individuals; in females it collects around the clitoris and in the folds of the labia minora.

Smegma is noticeable as a smooth or moist texture until it is allowed to accumulate, when it takes on its characteristic texture and appearance described in many texts as "cheesy". Because smegma tends to accumulate under the foreskin in males, its presence is less common and less noticeable in circumcised males.

The subpreputial moisture keeps the glans moist and may lubricate the movement of the foreskin. However, if allowed to accumulate and decay in the foreskin cavity it can provide an ideal medium for potentially pathogenic bacteria to colonize;current medical opinion is that allowing smegma to accumulate freely is unhealthy. Accumulation of smegma can cause or aggravate a variety of irritations known as balanitis. Early medical studies such as those by Plaut (1947) and Heins et al (1958) claimed that smegma accumulation led to the development of penile cancer, but the American Cancer Society states that more recent studies have failed to support this.

Preventing accumulation is best done by rinsing the area with warm water. In females, the hood of the clitoris can be gently pulled back to wash away accumulated smegma. Some argue that soap is best avoided because it depletes natural skin oils and may cause non-specific dermatitis.[6] Noticeably unpleasant cheese-like odors can be an indicator of a potentially serious medical problem, or a need to gently wash away excess with water. Deodorant sprays or washes may cause thrush or thrush-like conditions — washing using warm water only is recommended by health professionals if you have senitive skin, or suffer from dermatitis reactions to using soap like products.

Smegma has become part of a campaign being waged by a small but vocalanti-circumcision movement, with the movement citing the potential usefulness of smegma, which is generally lost following circumcision. Medical opinion is split on the whether this may be true or not.

The term is one of the few English words referring to aspects of human genitalia that is of Greek and not Latin origin.

Hope this helps someone else.

Missy, I would contact your doctor today.  The combination you described--smell and scab--is something you should bring to the attention of a professional.  To me, a foul smell may be indicattive of infection and you may need a course of antibiotics.  I'm not trying to frighten or worry you, but this is an issue best discussed with a medical professional.  Please call today :)

Still, I think it would be best if you called Dr. Bowers and see what she has to say.  You can never be too careful

Valerie,
I had never heard of using hibiclens after surgery, especially for so long. It seems that the combination of using hibiclens in the bath and douching would eliminate not only bad bacteria but also all the good bacteria on the body. I just wonder if one can make their body too sterile, especially for so long. I did not use hibiclens, except for the morning before surgery, and I have not had any bad smells or any infection issues.

What exactly are you doing to keep the area clean?  Are you able to look under and clean the clitoral hood and surrounding areas?  Are you just using anti-bacterial soap?  At this stage how careful do you have to be when handling that area?

To keep things clean, just rinse with the shower head on gentle when I shower, change pads regularly, and if anything needs cleaning clean gently with gauze pads. Most of the heavier discharge from the swelling just went away a few days ago. I had a lot of swelling so probably had heavier discharge than some. Things stay pretty clean down there with that regiment. I have sent photos to my surgeon and been to my primary in the last week, and they say everything looks fine with what I have been doing. I think some err on the side of keeping things super duper clean. My concern is making sure that I maintain the right balance of bacteria, since the good bacteria are important to a healthy vagina. Without them, bad bacteria stand a better chance of taking over. In the end, one should follow the instructions of their doctor rather than relying on the experiences of advice of non medical professionals.

Brassard's patients are instructed to douche twice daily and take 2 sitz baths with a small amount of hibiclens for the first 2 months. I'm in my last week of that. Starting next week, I'll have to change my regimen.

I'm not looking forward to leaving gel inside after a dilation. I use alot to avoid irritation. It looks like pads will be even more helpful then.

Hi Valerie, I'm just starting to get together the needed post surgical supplies.  I was wondering what are you using for douching and what is needed for a sitz bath?

Also, is there wifi connectivity at the hospital and residence in Montreal?  Are we allowed to use wireless devices at the hospital?

Thanks

I am using vinegar and water for douching. They give you a recipe, 1/4 cup of vinegar and distilled water. You can also buy them at the store. I'm re-using bottles from Massengill and soaking the removable tip along with my dilators in a hibiclens solution you change daily (Next week I stop soaking the dilators).

For the sitz bath (while at the residence), they give you a small plastic soaking tub and they will have you fill that with water and a very small amount of hibiclens. The tub is used just to splash water, it's not large enough to sit in.

Thanks Val!  So the douche itself is just one of those Masengill ones you get at the drug store or is there something else I should be looking for?

I did contact Dr Bowers office and I told them of the smell and they told me that I might have an infection but when i told them that the smell wasnt coming from my vagina but from the clitoral area, the nurse said "how do you know it isnt coming from the vagina" and I told her that because the smell is coming from the discharge on the pad where the clit is supposed to be and not further down on the pad where my vagina is also when i remove the dilator, there has NEVER been ANY odor or blood on it AND I put my finger over the clitoral area and that is where the smell is.  So she said OK then just take a sitz bath with epsoms salts and swish the water around that area and if the smell persists, go to my physician.  So I took one that night and the next morning, the smell had subsided 70% then the next day 20% and it has been a week and the smell is totally gone, now as far as that area that looked like a scab, I am almost positive that it is my clit starting to submerge.  It is where it is supposed to be once i surfed the web and looked a natal females vagina.

Also again, Dr. Bowers is TOTALLY against douching.  TOTALLY.   She said that my body is trying to develop certain bacterias and you are washing it away and interfering with the progress.   She says, like other physicians say to genetic females, NEVER DOUCHE.

Now that is the advice from my Dr. and most.

Not saying that any other dr is wrong in their methods but dr bowers told me this herself, there is NO NEED TO DOUCHE.  So i asked her, " how does the lube get out of my vagina then"? She said, "the vagina is SELF CLEANSING and it will push it out and clean itself on its own so that is what is on the pad in that area when i change it.  When I smell that area, it smells 100% like target brand lube.

So some other forum I read, a woman had the same problem as me and the advice given to her was, that smell was a healing smell not fish.  Actually, after i examined and smelled again,  it was more tangy than fishy and i read in dr bowers discharge paper instructions that our vaginas will all of a sudden get a tangy smell that will morph into a sweeter smell that will be welcomed.

Well my clit was definitely under the scab.  The last sitz bath i took got ride of the dead skin and when i got out of the tub and looked, there it was.

Missy,
My clitoris is still kind of a grey-white color.  (As you know, my surgery was only a few days before yours.)  When I first noticed it I called Bowers' office and went to my local doctor for him to look at it.  Both said it is normal, shedding white cells or something.  The local doctor said there was no sign of infection.  I never experienced the smell, but then I haven't sniffed my panty-liner.

I take Epsom salt baths each night before bed and wash the area with bath soap when I shower.  I'm looking forward to it finally looking "normal" and being able to explore it a little more thoroughly. :icon_redface:

I couldn't find mine at first but Dr. McGinn showed me where it was hiding and yep, it does have feeling. I'm just at 3 weeks post on Monday and my little button looks pink and healthy, though maybe still a bit sore down there. I tried some gentle rubbing it in the shower but hard to separate feelings from pains at this point. I've been packing the entire area with gauze pads and it helps keep it clean of that white blood cell goop lol

Also at Dr. McGinn's request I'm trying a few hyperbaric oxygen treatments (where you breath oxygen under pressure in a pressure chamber for 2 hours). This is supposed to be very good for helping to heal open wounds and such, so we'll see how that goes. I had one treatment so far and it does appear to have helped with the blood supply down there, which is important at this stage of healing.
