So I was just wondering what you guys wear to work, especially those of you who aren't out as trans. I'm a manager at a restauraunt and the shirts are provided but we need to have our own pants. They recently came out with a new rule book and in it it states that we must wear clothes that pertain to our sex. I've always worn boys pants to work but a friend of mine that I work with was giving me a hard time saying that I couldn't anymore. I said I would quit if that's true, but can they really fire you for that?

Btw I was just curious does anybody have silly bands where you are? Because its a new huge trend where I am and even adults are all wearing them and I was wondering if its anywhere else as well...

When I worked I was out to trans to my coworkers and manager but was not actively out (meaning, did not tell the customers to refer to me by male pronouns) and it wasn't an issue. So long as the fit is appropriate it didn't matter.

You can be fired for not following dress code but it depends on what state you live in and how strict they are aout it.

We have silly bands, my niece has a crap load of 'em. I saw an adult wearing a bunch of them on the train today. It was weird.

My job is to clean blood off of walls at a meat locker, so they let me wear whatever I want, as long as I don't want it to get ruined by bleach.

I'm not quite sure about being fired about choice of clothing, but I'm going to have to agree with Nygeel, if you don't follow dress code you could be fired or written up.

How can they tell, really, with regards to pants? Unless the rule book is implying that female-bodied people must wear skirts, pants are pants. I know they get cut differently (which makes a difference when it comes to fit) but will they really know at a glance if they aren't told?

Thats what I was wondering because I don't know how they can prove it unless they make you take off your pants and look at the tag or something. And we can't wear skirts so its only pants, I don't really know. I haven't actually got threatened by anyone above me and I don't think that my manager would go through all that trouble over it but the rule just doesn't make sense to me, and it really bothered me when my friend brought that up.

The cut tends to be different and I think the zippers go in opposite directions. Probably wrong on that one. Maybe it's just buttons?

Some states have laws protecting gender expression. You might look into the laws in your area.

It seems pretty silly to me that your employer limits people to sex-specific pants. A lot of pants are unisex. A lot of women like men's pants. Why do they care?

I think as long as your pants aren't incredibly male, there's not much they can do.  I mean, woman's uniform pants are very close to mens', anyway.  There are only very slight differences.  If you don't make a big deal out of it and your friend doesn't either, I doubt they'll even notice.  Makes you wonder the rule on underwear, though....

I have some silly bands.  I worked in elementary and middle schools all last year, so they were unavoidable (they really get me in with the kids).  I think the more masculine trend (among middle school boys, at least) is only to wear two or three silly bands at a time.  I usually wear two at a time and I like to coordinate the ones I wear with what I'm wearing that day (one similar color and one contrasting color.  And yes, I'm gay).

I mean, I know that several decades ago women's pants tended to have a zipper on the hip rather than at the fly, and an extra high waist. These days, the big difference seems to be that they are shorter in the leg and hug the crotch and butt way more than men's pants do. I know that personally I have never been able to successfully wear women's pants comfortably, whereas men's pants fit just right.

Anyway, unless there are other locations where they sometimes have women in skirts, this rule seems pretty ridiculous. It sounds more like something your friend is glomming onto, rather than anything management is going to enforce. What are they going to do, exclaim, "Those pants aren't ass-shaming enough, they must be GUY PANTS" and write up a citation?

on pants - what can they REALLY do? As long as you're not wearing carpenter pants or something overtly male, what can they say "those pants aren't tight enough on your butt"? That's sexual harrassment if they do.

Ive applied to a few other places recently but no one else is really hiring, and since I've been there for so long I probably wouldn't be able to make as much money somewhere else. I'll probably end up staying there until I finish college.

And I guess everyone else agrees that it's a really stupid rule and theres no way they can really  prove what kind of pants i'm wearing? And another thing is the company is very accepting of gays, theres a few, and i'm just out as a lesbian to them for now, but whenever I try to bring up the topic of transgendered, no one seems very educated at all so it's hard to explain to them. I don't know how they'd react to knowing I'm trans..

Yikes. That's a totally ridiculous rule...It sounds like somebody must have done something stupid to get that on the books (i.e., a guy wearing obviously girl's clothes to flaunt the rules or something).  I wouldn't worry too much, so long as they are conservative and aren't overtly male. If someone (like your friend) questions, just tell them that they fit better. Unless your bosses are idiots with too much time on their hands, its doubtful they'll make a deal out of it. After all, who cares about pants when customers are screaming in your face?

I'm lucky in that I can wear cargo pants or slacks in brown or black, and solid-colored or Hawaiin shirts. I usually wear my cargos and a black t-shirt...as gender neutral as I can get.

though i have run into a similar issue at work, my boss tells me to "dress more neatly" even though i wear jeans and a t-shirt like the other employees, the only difference is that i wear men's jeans and men's shirts/t-shirts, and my jeans don't hug my ass. i wish companies would get a grip with this sort of thing

I'd threaten to quit/quit if someone made me wear a female specific uniform. 

Previous to my current job I worked fast food where everyone wore the exact same thing... provide your own pants as long as they are black you're good.  Now I work at a dept store.  I'm legally male though, so I wear a shirt/tie ect.
