Q. Who is Caster Semenya?

A. She is a 19-year-old second-year student at the University of Pretoria who grew up in a remote, rural part of Limpopo province in South Africa. She lived with her grandmother while attending high school in a house with no running water or electricity.

Her running talent first came to attention in 2008 when she won the 800 metres gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

In July 2009, she won the senior African title in Mauritius just a few weeks before she scored a runaway victory in Berlin to be crowned world champion.
