Norrie May-Welby, who now lives in Australia, made headlines earlier this year after the New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry issued a certificate declaring the Scottish-born 48-year-old "sex not specified".

But, seversl weeks later the New South Wales government said that the official document had been withdrawn after legal advice suggested the registry did not have the power to issue such a certificate.

Norrie has now filed an appeal against the decision. A final ruling is expected by the end of the year.
