Throughout history countless men and women have lived successful and often very public lives as the opposite sex. Some of these transgendered individuals were even praised and worshipped.
Greek gods could change genders, have two genders, and do pretty much whatever they wanted. Many Native American tribes revered dual gendered individuals as holy people. In India today, beautifully dressed eunuchs are considered good luck at weddings (although otherwise they are completely outcast from society).
