Movies you've loved!

I know that we have shared our all-time favorites, but I thought I would restart this for movies we have seen this year.

Two movies I saw this year are Hero and Cars.

Hero is a great tragic-hero story that you need to see in the original CHinese.  (Yes, you can turn the subtitles on! )  I know that it came out a few years ago, but I didn't see it until recently.

If you know anything about NASCAR, you will love Cars!  IT is loaded with subtle and not so subtle references to racing.  As an adult, half the fun of the movie was finding al the hidden racing "treasures."

Transamerica got me into serious trouble. It brought me here to Susans....
V for Vendetta.  I think this film should be mandatory by everyone.
Mercury rising was a good action film.
Stealth was fun with cool characters... a bit light on content and plot.

I saw White Christams last night on the Turner Movie Channel. I was in total envy of the dresses worn by the actesses. Elegant, seductive, curvy where they should be!!. The designs, the material in the dresses, the sequins...to die for! All the ladies wore heels; ladies acted like ladies and gentlemen treated ladies as ladies. am I crazy or have we lost something since those days?

I have just seen Casino Royale with Daniel Craig, which was fabulous.

My favourite film in 2006 however was a Stephen Spielberg Cartoon.... Monster House.

It was great, with such fantastic gags.

The main thread here is 2006 movies.  We are current movie challenged as I don't much care to go to theaters.  I think the only movies we've seen this year was Cars.  Loved it!  We will try to get to see Casino Royale; I'm hearing good things about it.  Sounds like it may be the best since From Russia With Love, which I consider the best Bond movie.

You're right Jennyclassgal about the classics like White Christmas!  No, you're not crazy, we have lost a lot since those days, certainly in class and style.  The old ones are the best.  I guess it's time for my Geritol.

Have since seen Casino Royale - very, very good.  I read the Ian Fleming Bond books prior to the movies being made.  My mind picture from the books of James Bond was matched almost completely by Sean Connery.  With Daniel Craig, and the elimination of most of the hokey stuff of the later movies, they have a worthy successor.

I loved Brokeback Mountain too. I didn't think I would... it wasn't what I expected. Much more emotional than I anticpated (god, that scene at the end with his parents and in his old room...). A bit too somber perhaps. But the wilderness shots... wow, that was breathtaking. Just the beauty of that combined with the music brought me to tears.

The Last Samuarai had it's moments. Not the violence, but the honour and trying to be a good person and do the Right Thing despite what everyone around you is demanding you do. Gee. Hmmm.

I haven't seen this movie, but I've heard "not very good comments" about it at work.  I guess I will just find out for myself, so I'll rent it next weekend.

Since I never go to the movies (not since getting divorced) I watch them at home when they come out on DVD.  Some of these may have hit the screens in 2005 but I think all were released on DVD in 2006:

Thank You For Smoking - Pretty funny take about a clever lobbyist for big tobacco.  He's a genius at spinning things.  I'd imagine much of what is in the movie is based on facts.  We need this guy representing TGs.  He'd have society begging our forgiveness for all the years of repression!

War Of The Worlds - It was okay.  Really didn't do much for me.

40 Year Old Virgin - It made me laugh.  Just what it was supposed to do.

The DaVinci Code - Loved it!  I had heard it wasn't as good as the book.  Few movies are.  The book was excellent, as long as you didn't take anything personally.  Both require the reader/viewer to think.  I love those kinds of stories.

Beautiful Boxer - This probably was released a while ago but I just heard about it this year.  It's based on the true story of an Asian kick boxing champion who used his/her winnings in the ring to fund transitioning and become the woman she knew she was inside (not that anyone here can relate  ).  It's a pretty good story line with great choreography.

Some of these were on cable so not sure if they came out in 2006 or not.

"V for Vendetta"....Probably the best movie I saw in 2006.

"Just Friends"....I'm a huge Ryan Reynolds fan and this movie was hilarious I thought.

"Million Dollar Baby"...Great movie, enough said.

"Cinderella Man"...Probably the only Russel Crowe movie I have ever liked.

"The Kinsey Report"...I'm a big fan of Liam Neeson and of Kinsey.

"TransAmerica"...It was an ok movie perhaps because of being TS I didn't find it as compelling as others.
"Brokeback Mountian"...Gets a nod simply for being edgy.  I didn't find the movie itself particularly interesting.

"TransAmerica"...It was an ok movie perhaps because of being TS I didn't find it as compelling as others.

All I heard was what a great movie this was.  Some friends of mine saw it several times.  I bought the DVD on their recommendation.  I really didn't care for it.  It took me several tries to watch the whole movie.  I kept losing interest and turning it off.  I think part of the problem is Huffman plays such a dark character, deeply troubled.  I couldn't relate.  Sure transitioning is tough but I've never experienced the highs I have at any previous time in my life.  I guess I wanted Bree to be a bit less serious about herself.

A more accurate portrayal of transitioning (for me anyway) is It's Different For Girls.  I got into that movie.
