Fire crews and police officers received an unexpected surprise when they responded to a possible fire at Northgate Trailer Park in Payette Sunday morning.

Payette Police Chief Mark Clark said units were dispatched to 1300 N. Ninth St. in Payette at about 11 a.m. when a neighbor of a single -wide manufactured home reported hearing an explosion and seeing smoke come from a neighboring residence. When fire and police personnel arrived, they found what appeared to be four pipe bombs on the front porch of the residence and a propane tank between the bombs.

While crews were at the scene, a third call came in about a female running in the nude along U.S. 95 near Payette and carrying a cylindrical object.

Clark said the female was Catherine Carlson, a transgender female who underwent a sex change operation in 1980.

That car was quickly linked to the trailer home, but not before a third call came into police about a naked woman running down Highway 95 with what appeared to be a pipe bomb. Police arrested Catherine Carlson for indecent exposure. They say the car, and trailer is her's.

Carlson is known to police, after a 2007 ticket for driving with a suspended license. The officer wrote the ticket with her former name Daniel Carlson. "She's had some issues with the Payette county jail regarding her sexual orientation," Payette Chief of Police Mark Clark said. Carlson is transgendered and went through gender reassignment surgery some 30 years ago, and fought to have the ticket and her name taken off county records.

Catherine Carlson, 53, was arrested Sunday after firefighters responding to a report of a fire found pipes made to look like bombs on the porch of her trailer home in Payette, with a note warning of a booby-trap, authorities said.

About 50 homes were evacuated in the southwestern Idaho city when another call came in, reporting a car fire at a storage unit on U.S. Highway 95. The vehicle had been doused in gasoline.

PAYETTE, Idaho - Police say a woman set fire to her mobile home after dousing it with gasoline and leaving a propane tank and several pipe bombs inside, then drove to a storage unit and set fire to her car before running naked down Highway 95.

Seven agencies converged in Payette on Sunday responding to calls of a booby-trapped mobile home and possible bomb threat on Highway 95.

A transgender woman in Idaho — reportedly upset over local police identifying her as male — is accused of rigging four pipe bombs, setting her car on fire, and running nude down a highway.

Fifty homes in Payette, Idaho, had to be evacuated after four pipe bombs were found on the porch of 53-year-old Catherine Carlson's  trailer home; a bomb squad robot later detonated them. Authorities say that in addition to setting up the bombs, Carlson doused her car with gasoline and set it ablaze inside a storage facility. Carlson was spotting racing down a rural highway wearing no clothes.
