Numbers
Statistics on the number of transgender people are hard to find. Some data suggest that roughly one in 30,000 adult males and one in 100,000 adult females seek gender-reassignment surgery. MarieEve Baron, of the Association des transsexuels et transsexuelles du Quebec, says Montreal's transgender community numbers about 3,000, not counting people who have not or don't plan to have surgery.
Violence
Studies show that 60 per cent of all trans people are victims of violence because they are trans. The 2001-2002 Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics study of 12 major Canadian police forces (including Montreal's) showed that there were 928 hate crimes in those years.
