Just a bit of fun here. You got to love this song - which actually made it into the lower reaches of the UK charts a while back

We have a DJ in Cornwall who I know, and who plays it non stop.

It's fab!

Anyone else got anything else from mainstream music that has a trans related theme?

Quote
I had a friend called Joe
When friends were hard to find
He had a restless soul
With something on his mind

One day I went away
And when returned to the scene
Not to find restless Joe, no
But to find Josephine...

"Sans contrefaçon" by Mylène Farmer

it was a great hit in 1987 and my favorite song for a year or so. I did not like the music, but understood the lyrics. It was great to hear that I was not the only one. And it's pretty obvious that it's about a trans or genderqueer kid and that the author knows exactly what they're writing about. I had it on tape and only listened to this song in secret so that my parents did not know what I did.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sans_contrefa%C3%A7on

Rough translation of the lyrics:

"Tell me Mom, why am I not a boy?"

As you have to choose
I can say it in soft words
I don't fake it
I am a boy

Completely alone in my closet
with black rings under my eyes
hiding from the looks
I defy chance
In this world which makes no sense
I do only what I want
With a handkerchief in the crotch of my trousers
I am Chevalier d'Eon*

As you have to choose
I can say it in soft words
I don't fake it
I am a boy
And even if you give me an empire
I don't want to undress
as without faking it
I am a boy

Over and over again
you chase me away from your meetings
I don't admit you to threaten
my resolutions
I don't care about rumors
A am cameleon
beware of my tin soldiers
These are the ones who will kill you

As you have to choose...

In the French original, the adjectives etc. are all in the male form here.

*The Chevalier d'Eon was an Aristocrat who lived as a woman the second half of his life

Here's the song on youtube: (how do I insert that?)

And this is what Wikipedia says about it:

"The song's lyrics seem to be autobiographical. Indeed, in interviews, Farmer often explained that when she was younger, a lot of people thought she was a boy[5][6] because of her androgynous look (she had the short hair).[7] To strengthen even more doubt, she confessed she "put a handkerchief in her trousers", as it is said in the song's lyrics.[8]  About the period of her adolescence, Farmer said: "I was half-man, half woman, it was quite strange. I never liked playing with dolls at the dinette... I always preferred boys' games. I was not a tomboy, but a girl missed."[9]"

I like to think of I'm A Boy by The Who as one...

Also, Reflection from Mulan, anyone?

So they may not have been intended as trans songs, but that's how i interpret them :P

This is a Really Good Gender Song
that i love :)

but all the girls in the music video are played by men
and all the men played by women

(The Guy in the beginning is The Singer in the black dress is :)
who is also the lead singer)

I ♥ Portishead!!

QuoteI'm so tired of playing
Playin' with this bow and arrow
I gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long

Just give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman

From this time unchained
We're all lookin' at a different picture
Through this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over and give us some room, yea

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman

So don't you stop, being a man
Just take a little look
From our side when you can
Show a little tenderness
No matter if you cry

Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman
'Cause it's all I wanna be is all a woman, yea

For this is the beginning of forever and ever
Its time to move over
So tired of playing

So tired of playing
Playin' with this bow and arrow
I gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls, to play
For I've been a temptress too long

Just give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be

I have to agree with the Reflection thing. I wonder how many of us as kids saw that scene and were struck by the eerie relation to ourselves of something we'd never told anyone.

Detachable Penis by King Missile

I woke up this morning with a bad hangover
And my penis was missing again.
This happens all the time.
It's detachable.
This comes in handy a lot of the time.
I can leave it home, when I think it's gonna get me in trouble,
or I can rent it out, when I don't need it.
But now and then I go to a party, get drunk,
and the next morning I can't for the life of me
remember what I did with it.
First I looked around my apartment, and I couldn't find it.
So I called up the place where the party was,
they hadn't seen it either.
I asked them to check the medicine cabinet
'cause for some reason I leave it there sometimes
But not this time.
So I told them if it pops up to let me know.
I called a few people who were at the party,
but they were no help either.
I was starting to get desperate.
I really don't like being without my penis for too long.
It makes me feel like less of a man,
and I really hate having to sit down every time I take a leak.
After a few hours of searching the house,
and calling everyone I could think of,
I was starting to get very depressed,
so I went to the Kiev, and ate breakfast.
Then, as I walked down Second Avenue towards St. Mark's Place,
where all those people sell used books and other junk on the street,
I saw my penis lying on a blanket
next to a broken toaster oven.
Some guy was selling it.
I had to buy it off him.
He wanted twenty-two bucks, but I talked him down to seventeen.
I took it home, washed it off,
and put it back on. I was happy again. Complete.
People sometimes tell me I should get it permanently attached,
but I don't know.
Even though sometimes it's a pain in the ass,
I like having a detachable penis.

Lola - The Kinks

Absolute Classic !

I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola [LP version:
Coca-Cola]
C-O-L-A cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a DARK BROWN voice she said Lola
L-O-L-A Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

Well I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

Well we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said little boy won't you come home with me
Well I'm not the world's most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Well I looked at her and she at me

Well that's the way that I want it to stay
And I'll always want it to be that way for my Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

Well I'd left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said little boy I'm gonna make you a man

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
