Among love stories that endure for years but ultimately end badly as the partners go through changes, Daniel Laplante has lived an epic one.

The 44-year-old city of Montreal blue-collar worker was with the same woman for 20 years -when he was a woman. A few years ago, when his profound discomfort with his female body became too unbearable, Laplante underwent the first two of three gender-reassignment surgeries needed to become physically male.
