Traveling to Canada with old passport.

Hey guys,

Its been awhile since I've been active here but just had a quick question.

I'm taking am impromptu day visit to Canada tomorrow but my passport hasn't been changed to my updated name and gender. Its changed on everything else. I have my name change document and physician letter with me as well as my changed drivers license. I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this or knew what I could expect?

Take a copy of your legal name change and any other documents you have to prove you are who you say you are. It's better if you can put these into a manilla envelope or similar that's completely closeable, since that will ensure nothing has been lost and when it's being handed back to you, you can be sure that they haven't misplaced anything. Be prepared to be detained for a short while (up to an hour) while someone looks over the paperwork and remain calm. There shouldn't be ANY issues as long as everything you have has an official seal on it.

I go to Canada every year skiing and I drive up. They barely check your passport or car if the picture looks like you you will be fine. Is not I would take all the documents and up to date photo id. Also when I went last my passport name and gender wasn't changed  on my passport and I passed 100%. they even said to my parents 4 boys you must have your hands full

Thanks, yeah I still look similar to the photo but I was pre-t then and I've been on T for over 4 years now so I'm just anticipating them questioning the F on the passport.

I am Canadian. I just recently went through the border for a trip to USA and back in 3 days. They only asked for my pass port nothing else. But, for my friend her passport photo didn't look like her ( blond hair to dark hair and 50 lbs heavier) So they asked her for a back up picture I.D for confirmation. If you look like your photo you should be fine with just that. But, just in case like everyone else said bring your Legal change of name letter and all that good stuff

I think it relates more to flying but there are some issues in Canada where they can restrict access to travel/flying if you don't appear to be of the gender indicated on your ID/passport.  It's going to look especially odd if your ID and passport don't line up.  So I concur with the above: take your official change of name documentation.

This is why if you can change gender for your passport without SRS (something not possible in Canada believe it or not, which is why this rule caused outrage) then you absolutely SHOULD get it changed, especially if visiting Canada.

I don't mean to alarm you.  I'm 90% sure it'd be fine but it's important to be aware of.  I am of the belief this rule does exist still, but I'm not sure how much it's actually adhered to.
