How soon can I get on Testosterone? I've been seeing a counselor for over 10 years, she's actually a social worker, but I came out to her about being trans about maybe a year or so ago. Can I just go to my doctor and get on T or do I have to see a gender therapist for years and then get a referral? I really wanna get on T. I wanna make these changes as soon as possible.

Also, I'm nervous about shots. I hate needles. How often do you get shots and where do you get the shots... arms, legs, etc...?  I heard about patches too.... Are they any good?

A lot of questions there :) To answer the basic ones quickly and get them out of the way.

There are options other than shots, but shots seem to commonly be the route to get fastest results. There are pills, patches, gels... I think that's all but honestly I don't always keep up the best on these things since I'm old school and do shots lol.

Shots can be done in tons of places and will depend on if your doctor wants to do intramuscular which is the most common. I do intramuscular and can choose between my butt, thighs and arms (depending on the amount of muscle you have in your arm, I still need to do more lifting to build my biceps before I could go that route).

As far as how to go about getting on T, that depends on a lot and takes a lot more discussion. Have you talked to the counselor about rather or not she is even able to write notes? Depending on her degree and her job she may not actually be qualified to do so. You may need to see a regular therapist or even a specialist who works with people who are trans or have gender related issues. Where I live (Omaha, NE) there are literally 3 or 4 therapist who will write notes for sure after they see you for awhile (each one is different in their personal standards of time period). Sometimes I've heard of psychiatrists writing them as well. You may want to contact your doctor and ask their advice. There may be specific types of providers you would need to use in your area, for example here my endo does my HRT but my regular doctor (internal medicine specialist) will not provide that service. It varies from place to place and doctor to doctor it seems.

If you are getting no where with the counselor though I'd definitely say ask your doctor for some advice on who to turn to where you live.

To expand on my statement about rather or not your social worker has the appropriate degree or JOB, I had a friend who saw a therapist for 2 years but her company would not allow her to give him a note... they simply did not do that. However a psychiatrist who worked with the company doing discount work for their patients was allowed to write him a note since he actually worked for a different company and his company had no policies about that. So your years in counseling may not be wasted if she can't personally write one, she may be able to refer you to another provider she works with regularly who can assist in that.

Thanks. I've been looking up gender therapist in my area but can't find any. I can ask my counselor if she can help me out in finding one if I need one.

I'm not sure if she can write notes... maybe. I'll have to ask her.

Thanks for the reply.

You might also consider reposting something in the FTM section, a lot of people don't frequent the other portions of the board and there is more traffic there for people who might have some good input too :)

if after counselling you about something for ten years your counsellor can grasp what being TS is all aboiut she may be able to write to doctor saying that getting on T may be good for you and may feel willing to take a shared-care role of you and your medication and possible transition.
