OMG!  I was just reading posts on this thread when I suddenly remembered that a VMY ago I actually tried to get help from a by-mail counselling service - this was before the internet - and the guy kept repeating that I was a crossdresser punishing myself by crossdressing and purging etc.
But at that time I did not know the word transsexual and the idea that i could have been one just never entered my head as in those days there were males, females and male queers - nothing else.  It's possible that transsexual was used in the press at the time but I don't remember seeing it and probably wouldn't have as I made sure I never showed any interest in articles about sex.  The press in those days was more interested in the love lives of poiticians and starlets than anything else.
Now of course I feel sure I was just being a typical MtF or was I?
