With rare access, photographer Bindi Cole captured a thriving trans community in the Tiwi Islands.

When photographer Bindi Cole met Foxxy Empire, the Aboriginal drag creation of Jason De Santis, she was immediately captivated. Cole, who is of English, Jewish and Wathauring descent, had just completed a project that explored her own identity and her place in the world.

"I wondered how Foxxy reconciled with hers," Cole tells SX. "You couldn't be more of a minority being Aboriginal, gay and a drag queen and yet to be so strong and proud was something that resonated with me."

Thus, a few years later, Cole spent five weeks photographing Jason and others at Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory. The result is striking collection of images that captures the heart and soul of the Sistagirl community.
