People are going to go on reading messages in what others wear so long as people insist that what they wear is a form of self-expression. You can't have it both ways: either what you wear is a unique expression of your individuality, or what you wear doesn't mean anything.
Self expression has a very broad definition. I like wearing what I wear, I feel I look good in what I wear and if I feel like I look good it gives me confidence. I'm personally not trying to be outlandish or make a statement, so it's not exactly an extreme form of self expression for me. I also change attire when appropriate. I wouldn't wear a printed t-shirt to a business meeting but I'll certainly wear that for regular daily activities. Some people out there consider t-shirts, hoodies, tight jeans, sneakers, etc. "young people" attire. I can't change their minds. When you're 16 and you're going out of your way to dye your hair a wacky color, get obvious piercings and dress a certain way, that's also a form of self expression just like dressing in cardigans and tweed jackets is too. The point is, people look at someone and all they have to go by is physical looks and attire until they start to talk to them, interact, and get to know them. So therefore tons of people make initial judgments on that. Whether you let those people's judgments affect your daily life is more the issue I think.
