Spirit week is coming up at my school. That means that each day has a theme which those of us with School Spirit! dress to fit. One of the days:
Opposite gender day.

I'm only out to one person, but i'm seriously considering coming to school in a skirt.

Not majorly subtle, but i think it'd be fun. Or scary. Or maybe nobody would notice.

What would you do?

Initially it seems like a good idea....

However, then the more I thought about it - I don't think you would get the result you wanted.  I think people would assume you forgot about spirit week or people would see you in a dress and then hold that against you when you tell them you are trans.

However, you know the culture of the school - only you could really tell

Tough call.  I would probably deal with it by wearing some ridiculous combination of things, like a skirt and a fake mustache.  My secret weapon is my ability to refuse to take things seriously.

I had that day at my school too.  I drew a lame mustache on with eyeliner since I already wore all male clothes, but that was before I realized I wasn't actually a girl.  I'm not sure what I'd do now.  If you don't already dress in guy clothes this could be a great opportunity for you to go in 'guy-mode' without fear of repercussions.  Or you could go in a dress and exaggerated makeup so people would notice a difference.  I think that's what I would do now, but that's just me.  Like Alex, if someone questioned it I would laugh it off and joke about how I was more of a dude than a girl anyway (because I already did joke about that).

Just do what you're most comfortable doing!

Back when my school had the same spirit week event, I got together with my friends and we all did all-out drag, complete with makeup and glitter. But that was as part of a group of guys (albeit some of them much prettier than I was)...not sure it would have worked as well if I'd done it on my own.

My high school had a stick up its butt about dress codes. Men weren't allowed to wear skirts, which became a rule after guys started wearing skirts as part of their regular wardrobe. So an Opposite Gender day would never happen. But if there were one, I would dress in all-out drag. Not just a little girly, but with insane amounts of makeup and a stuffed bra. Considering I never really wore anything particularly leaning toward one gender or the other, people would get the point.

I'd also go for the drag queen outfit.

You can either choose the more stylish version (Ru Paul) or the trashy one (Divine). I personally would prefer the later version and tailor a tacky shower curtain into a dress. Plus lots of make-up and a fabulous wig.

If you chicken out that morning or people react very suspicious in an unpleasant way before you come out as trans, you can still pretend that you're a faux queen for the day to save your a** (female drag queen).

Good luck!

I would probably do full-out drag, although I do like this idea:

That's interesting... our school has spirit week (run away!!!), but we've never had an opposite gender day. It would be fun, but awkward in our situation for the reason you pointed out; what are we supposed to do? The purpose of the event is to dress the opposite of your gender, which would be referring to your physical sex, which means you would go in boy's clothes, but since we're all actually male (and probably amazingly proud of it for such a crappy status), we would wear female clothes. Unless everyone who saw you knew you were trans (wearing girl's clothes), they'd hold it against you or assume you forgot. Since nobody knows, doing something over-the-top female would make it obvious you did it on purpose for that day, but then you can expect lots of weird remarks and questions.

It all boils down to one question; do you feel comfortable with it? If you think your school is open enough about those kinds of things, and you don't mind people knowing, go for it! If you don't want people to know, and they ask, just say since you normally wear boy's clothes, you thought it would be more in the spirit of things to wear something totally opposite to your normal clothes instead of what you'd normally wear. (I hope that made sense  ::) ) It's a believable excuse.

The annoying thing about that for a spirit day, is that, if you wear your normal guys clothes, people will look at you as female that day. If you wear girl's clothes, people know you as female (tomboyish), so they'll be confused and will ask tons of questions. It's a lose-lose situation. But I like Alexmakenoise's idea!  :P

But whatever you decide, good luck!

i'd go for the "dressing up as a girl" option. no need to actually wear a mini skirt but like a pink sweater and heavy makeup should make it clear to everyone. when someone asks you about it and you don't feel like explaining yourself to that person, you can always just say "it's a joke cause i usually only wear boys clothes"
