Dear Isadora: There was a story in the news recently about a 9-year-old boy who dresses like a girl and uses a girl's name at school. How can a child this young know about such matters and how can his or her parents support this?

Answer: Children begin to form their sense of identity far earlier than 9. If the child is transgender, he or she will be aware at a very early age that the body he or she is in "doesn't fit." I'm sure the family has gotten professional input on this very difficult situation.
