There is a great scene in the epic road movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert where transsexual Bernadette consoles young drag queen Felicia after Felicia was beat up by a bunch of homophobic miners in the Australian outback.

As Felicia cries, Bernadette says of their hometown Sydney, "I don't know if that ugly wall of suburbia was put there to keep us in or keep them out, but it protects us."

Sydney is, of course, one of the great gay meccas of the world, and Sydneysiders love their drag queens.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
